Georgia Weapons Carry License

Please read the following information prior to applying for license.

Applications for a Weapons Carry License will be accepted at the Franklin County Probate Court Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Please call on Thursday & Friday to make sure a Clerk is available due to Traffic Court Arraignments.

Fingerprinting for a Weapons Carry License will be conducted at the Franklin County Detention Center, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

At the time of applying, the applicant shall be subject to the following:

  1. Applicant must submit to the court, a valid driver's license or other photo I.D. Please note: If Driver's license or photo I.D. reflects a P.O. Box, other forms of documentation must be presented to prove applicant is a Franklin County resident. Applicant must apply in their county of residence.

Application may be completed online and appear in person to complete the application process. After the application is completed the Applicant is required to go to the Franklin County Detention Center within five (5)days for fingerprinting. Failure to do so may result in the dismissal of application. Cost of Application &Background Check is $75.00.
  3. Renewal Applicants - click here: https://www.georgiaprobaterecords.com/Firearms/OnlineApplication.aspx. Weapons Carry License is considered a renewal when applied for within 90 days or less prior to the expiration or no more than 30 days past the expiration date. Renewals will not require a fingerprinting cost associated with the application. However, a new application and consent form for a criminal background check will be required. Total Cost - $30.00. Complete the renewal application online and appear in person to complete the renewal process.
  4. A photo of applicant will be taken by court personnel at the time of applying.
  5. Payments can be made in the form of cash, check, credit card or money order made payable to Franklin County Probate Court. A fee is charged by the vendor for credit card use.

Upon the court reviewing the criminal background check, the court will make a finding as to the applicant’s eligibility to obtain a Weapons Carry License. If the applicant is eligible to receive a license, the license will be mailed to the applicant. If the applicant is found to be ineligible to receive a license, a notice of such ineligibility and procedures for requesting a formal hearing will be mailed to the applicant.
