About the Sheriff

Sheriff Steve Thomas was born and raised in Franklin County and lives with his wife Tina in Canon, Ga. Sheriff Thomas is a veteran law enforcement professional who has spent over 35 years protecting Franklin County citizens. Sheriff Thomas was sworn into office as the Sheriff of Franklin County in January 2005. Sheriff Thomas’s law enforcement career includes employment as a patrolman at Elberton Police Department, Lavonia Police Department, Chief of Police at Canon Police Department, and Captain at Franklin County Sheriff’s Office before being elected Sheriff. Sheriff Thomas is currently serving his fifth term as Sheriff of Franklin County.


Responsibilities

As the county’s primary law enforcement agency, we provide full law enforcement services to a population of more than 23,000 citizens living across 256 square miles.

Our office is charged with performing duties that include uniform patrol, criminal investigations, narcotics investigations, jail operations, courthouse security, and civil process.

The demands on the agency are great and ever-changing, but the men and women of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office rise to those challenges daily through extraordinary dedication to the community they proudly serve.
